Middle School

At Victoria International School of Sharjah, our Middle School (Grades 6–9) provides students with a strong academic foundation while nurturing the skills, values, and confidence needed to thrive in their Senior School years..

In Middle School, students move into a more specialised model of learning where subject-specialist teachers deliver English, Mathematics, Science, Humanities, Art, PE, and Ministry of Education subjects such as Arabic, Islamic Studies, and UAE Social Studies. This structure fosters independence and allows students to engage with content at a deeper and more analytical level, supported by expert teaching that develops critical thinking and enquiry skills. The curriculum is carefully designed to ensure continuity with the Primary years, while also preparing students for the increasing academic demands of secondary school.

Teaching across all subjects is underpinned by Hattie’s High Impact Teaching Strategies, ensuring that practices such as explicit teaching, multiple exposures, differentiated instruction, and feedback for learning are consistently embedded. These approaches support students in building a deep understanding of concepts, applying knowledge across contexts, and steadily developing higher-order thinking and problem-solving skills.

Literacy development continues to be a central focus, with programmes such as Reading to Learn and Learning to Read embedded throughout the curriculum. These strategies strengthen comprehension, academic writing, and analytical skills, ensuring that students can access content and achieve success across all disciplines. Learning is further enhanced through a balance of homework, extended projects, and formal assessments, which promote responsibility, organisation, and resilience.

Students also have greater opportunities for debate, collaborative projects, hands-on investigations, and problem-solving activities, which allow them to apply their learning in meaningful and practical ways. These experiences not only consolidate subject knowledge but also develop transferable skills such as teamwork, creativity, digital literacy, and research. By combining the strengths of the Victorian Curriculum with the requirements of the UAE Ministry of Education, Middle School at VISS Kalba ensures that students are both globally minded and locally rooted, fully prepared for the academic challenges of secondary education and the opportunities of the future.
